Not much is happening at this moment. Sewing and quilting have come to an halt, and it will probably stay that way into the new year.
We had some visitors, and now preparations for Christmas and New Year are being made.
Until later!

Geskenke
We were for a short visit in South Africa, where we attended 2 weddings and of course a quick visit to the family. During our visit, I had the opportunity to present Brother 1 with his quilt. Needless to say that he was very excited and already planned when and where to use the quilt :)
Jy is baie dierbaar!
Also, during our visit, I had the privilege of visiting a fellow blogger. I discovered Karin's blog Beary Quilts on Quilting Bloggers. I never thought that Karin would live so close to our family, and a visit was in order. She made this cute pouch for me. You can read all about it on her blog. Again, thank you Karin for this gift. You are a dear!
Lastly, I had put today aside to continue working on my Bloggers BOM quilt. However, I paged through a magazine and saw this cute idea for a gift. I had some trouble with it, and it took me the whole day to make this cellphone bag. It is suppose to go to someone who is leaving for holiday, but I think I will have to redo it, as I am not very satisfied with it. It is o.k. for me, but not if I want to give it so someone. I saw the pattern in the Australian Homespun magazine (Vol. 12.12 - The Summer Issue). I, however, added a button where the pattern provided for a snap fastener.
Tot volgende keer!

Frienship Mini Quilt Swap
In September I took part in a mini quilt swap. It was a secret swap, thus I couldn't say much about it, until now.
We all received a stitchery and we had to make a quilt with it. The only requirements were that it had to be within a certain size and that the stitchery had to feature. Otherwise, we could set our creativity free.
Here is my version of the quilt. I stayed with the "garden" idea and appliqued some flowers with organza (just like with my pillows). My quilt went to Michele Foster from Quilting Gallery. She is also the organizer of the swap. (Thank you Michele for your input and a wonderful project.)
My "spook" was Benita Gustavsoon uit Swede.
My "secret partner" was Benita Gustavsson from Sweden. She made this lovely redwork version. She also send me this cute tray with Dala horses. Thank you very much Benita. The quilt and tray will be enjoyed and appreciated.
I would like to take part in another swap like this, when the time and opportunity allows it.
Regards for now!

Kussingslope
http://quilting.about.com/od/quiltpatternsprojects/ss/easy-pillowcase-pattern.htm
maar het dit bietjie aangepas. Dit is 'n vinnige en eenvoudige patroon.
After yesterday's post, I had to do something to make me feel better about my quilting. I decided to make to pillow cases from the left over fabrics of the quilt. I used this pattern
http://quilting.about.com/od/quiltpatternsprojects/ss/easy-pillowcase-pattern.htm
but made a few adjustments. It is a very quick and easy pattern.
The best thing is that I could roll the quilt up small enough for it to fit in the pillow case. Very cute way to wrap a quilt up in "gift wrapping".

Suur saam met die soet...
Wel, my groot kwilt is uiteindelik klaar!
Well, my big quilt is finally finished! It only took me 6 months, which for me is a record. I think the only other big quilt I finished in such a "short" time is Hubby's quilt. You will have to wait a bit longer though, before I show the final product. I want to give the quilt to Brother 1 first.
EDIT - Ek was al my kwilte in koue water (30 grade Celsius)
I do however have a question for you. I don't normally pre-wash my fabrics, and it seem that it came back to bite me. But there is something I don't understand. For this quilt I used Moda Marbles (except for the backing and the yellow in the middle of the quilt), and I bought it all from one online shop, where I bought many times before. But when I washed the quilt, three of the Marble colours lost their colour. It did not run, it just dissapeared! EDIT - I wash all my quilts in cold water (30 degrees Celsius)

Vergelyk die oranje en die geel heel regs - dis heeltemal dof op die kwilt/ Compare the orange and the yellow on the far right - it is very dull on the quilt
Vergelyk die blou heel links - dis ook dof / Compare the blue on the far left - it is also very dull
Hierdie kleure is almal reg / These colours are all fine.
Groete
I never had problems with Moda Marbles before and now 3 fabrics faded on the same quilt! How can this happen, and why not the other Marbles? Have anyone else had this kind of fading before, pre-wash or no?

Here is not much to report. My quilting has come to a stand still recently and all that I am working on is the big quilt.
All of the quilting is finished at last and I am halfway with the binding. To do 8 meters of binding takes some time, so I will show you some of the quilting instead. It is very simple straight line quilting, all along the seems of the blocks/forms. I really like the end result.
I used DMC multi coloured thread (blue and red) for the stars and the coloured part around them. For the background and backing I used corresponding colours.
Dis dit vir eers! Groete tot later.

Bietjie snywerk
I must admit that I don't have much to say. Since my last entry, I have only been quilting on Brother 1's quilt. I must also admit that I am getting tired of it and it is becoming more work than play. I still have a small piece to do as well as the border. Unfortunately the quilting won't show on a photo, so I decided not to take one now.
On the other hand, I did do some cutting of fabrics during our day long power failure last week (which lasted for 5 hours). I cut the pieces for last month's Bloggers BOM block as well as Brother 2's quilt fabrics.
So, toe los ek hulle.
For those interested, it is going well with the baby fish. During the power failure, ALL of the babies escaped from the breeding net. At fist I nearly had a hart attack, but later noticed that the adult fish are ignoring them. So, I let be. There seems to be 11 fry in total. One which is huge and 10 smaller fry.
Dis dit vir eers. Tot later!

Lentedag
Here in the southern hemisphere, spring is showing its head again. The weather is edging towards the warmer side and the desire to be out in nature is burning again. That is why our friends and us went on an hike this weekend - not so much because it was Spring day, but just because it is so much fun.
Our first stop on our field trip was at Grand Bassin. This is a crater lake. For the Hindu community, this is a sacred place and have build temples and statues for their gods, including Lord Shiva.
From there we went to the Black River Gorges for a hike. The weather threatened to rain, but luck was on our side. None the less, it was a cloudy day with a cold wind and few drops of rain. Sometimes the sky would clear up and some wonderful sunshine would pass through.
My skoene was 'n gemors, maar dankie tog vir Handy Andy!
Despite the sun, this is what our track looked like...wet and muddy. My shoes were a mess, but thank goodness for Handy Andy!

I had some time available this week for my fabrics. I finished basting the quilt, and also completed the Blogger's BOM blocks 10 and 11.
Blok 10 is deur Pam Vieira-McGinnis van Pam Kitty Mornings
Blok 11 deur Victoria Wolfe van Bumble Beans Inc.
Block 11 by Victoria Wolfe of Bumble Beans Inc.
Hier is hulle almal saam.
And here they are, all together.
Ek moet seker weer aandag gee aan my NYB blokke ook. Ek dink ek het 4 oor om te doen. Miskien later.
Groete!
I should give some attention to my NYB blocks as well. I think I have 4 left to do. Maybe later.

Aangename verrassing
The photos are not very good, sorry)
In the last week, my Zebra Danio's decided to spawn - spontaneously! I only have them since May. It was not my intention to breed, but I am ecstatic since there is almost 10 fry (at this stage they are too small to count accurately, so there can be more or less). Hubby and I spend nearly an hour this morning to catch the youngsters and place them in the breeding net. Last weekend we caught a baby as well, but from another spawning. That in itself was already a surprise.
The net will be their home for the next while, until they are big enough to swim with the adult fish. It will be a great pleasure if most of them survive.
Until later!
Today is a non-quilting blog entry. Mostly because I have such good news that I want to share with all. I have a fish tank with Zebra Danio and Platy fish. The last two weekends held a big surprise for me...
The photos are not very good, sorry)
You might have to click on the photo to make it bigger in order to see the fry)

Just this much left to do, before I can start quilting.
Soms sal ek musiek luister of 'n video speel, net vir agtergrond geluide. Werk soos 'n bom vir my. Hoe doen julle gewoonlik jul voorbereiding?
Groete
This is how I normally do my basting: I will sit/kneel on the cushion, and will baste row for row, from left to right. My only tools are the cushion, needles, thread, scissors and off course some leather thimbles. Sometimes I will play some music or a video, just for some background noise. This works like a charm for me. How do you normally do your basting?

Well, after a month of nothing, I suppose it is time that I say
something. To tell the truth, there isn't much to talk about. Hubby's
family came for a visit, and we enjoyed showing them the scenery and
places...
The face in the mountain...can you see it?(You will probably have to click on the photo and make it bigger to see)

Krokodille by La Vanille krokodil plaas. Dis 'n leker dag-uitstappie en julle sien meer as net leer handsakke en -skoene :) (Wanneer julle op die website is, werk die foto gallary selgs as julle die Franse taal kies)
Crocodiles at La Vanille Crocodile farm. It is a lovely day-trip, and you can see much more than just leather handbags and shoes :) (If you are on the website, the photo gallery only works when you are choosing the French language option)
Regarding my quilting, I am still busy with Brother 1's quilt. I had a bit of an issue regarding space. Since the quilt measures 2 meter x 2 meter, the floor space in room where I normally work in is too small to measure and cut the batting and backing. The result is that I decided to "camp out" in the hallway for a while...
Currently I am busy with the basting and I don't plan to take as long as with my other quilts in the past. Last night I managed to get a lot done since Hubby watched Olympic soccer on TV. I don't care much for that, so I spend some time on the quilt instead.

Bokant klaar!
The top of Brother 1's quilt is finished. I am really happy with the result. Since he is interested in the field of Science, I thought he would appreciate it if I arrange the colours in the whole quilt from the hottest to the coolest, with Cyan/Turquoise (I never know which one it really is) as the binding colour.
Jammer as die foto bietjie snaaks lyk.
Sorry if the photo is a bit funny. I tried something new and it did not work out exactly as I wanted, but you get the idea of how the quilt looks.
I am going to be "off the air" for a while. We are getting visitors tomorrow, and they are staying for two weeks. I don't think I will have much time for sewing.

Goeie vordering
At last I got the thread I needed for Brother 1's quilt, and jumped into action. All the blocks' sewing is done and the strips for the border are cut. I spend a few days pondering about the border, as I was not very happy with my initial ideas. Luckily I have decided on something that has me very excited, and it is not even a difficult pattern. I will show you the end results later, maybe this weekend still.

NYB Blok 6
Hoera!
Groete

Yippee! Another one is finished. I enjoyed making this block. So much so that I actually forgot to take some pictures. Hopefully I will write a post with bit more "body" next time.

NYB Blok 5
Nie te min, hier is my Blok 5:
En hier is almal by mekaar / And here they are, all together
Now, riddle me this: what exactly is the use of this umbrella? I don't think one can lie underneath it and tan. Maybe some shade for the fish?
Tot volgende keer! / Until next time!

5 more to go...I will see how much fabric is left in the end and maybe make a few more blocks just to make the quilt a big bigger.
