Flamboyant

In November and December, the beautiful Flamboyant blooms here in Mauritius.

Where I had the chance, I took some photos of Flamboyant  trees in our town while on my way back from the post office.

Verrassings!

Here in Mauritius, luck can catch you in the strangest of ways. Hubby was paging through the classifieds one evening and saw an advert that grabbed my attention like a magnet. Someone was selling a Butterfly sewing machine WITH its treadle table. After a few messages, it was agreed that I will buy the set.

The advert stated that it was situated in Bel Air, in the South. So we checked on the map and went our merry way. When we reached our destination, it was the wrong Bel Air (Grand Bel Air) and we discovered there was another Bel Air (Bel Air Riviere Seche) in the West. So we went there to collect the machine and table. The map calculated that it should have been an almost 3 hour drive. We drove for 4 hours and we had to stop to get something to eat, which wasn't planned. Our total trip there and back was 5 hours long, but it was worth it!

When we reached Bel Air Riviere Seche, we were requested to wait for the seller at the old post office. We searched a while for the building, but found it eventually...Needless to say it was not what we expected.

Here is what we brought back home with us:

The machine is working, but it needs some tlc. According to the owner, it was bought in 2005, and will you believe, it is electric! The decorations on the machine are very beautiful and I am sure that after some "love" it will look even better. The table is missing a extension table and the treadle cable is missing, but that we can add as necessary.

Sommige van julle sal onthou dat ek 'n paar jaar terug 'n soortgelyke masjien as 'n geskenk by Manlief gekry het. Hier is die blog inskrywing daarvoor.

Some of you will remember that I got a similar machine as a gift from Hubby, some years ago. Here is that blog entry.

Wel, hoe het julle jul naweek spandeer?

Well, how did you spend your weekend?

Gordyne

It has become hotter and hotter the last few weeks. The bedrooms suffers quite a lot in the summer because the afternoon sun shines on the rooms and then it feels like an oven in there. To try and keep the rooms cooler this summer, I decided to make blackout curtains.

"Blackout" Voering / Blackout Lining

Nuwe gordyn materiaal / New curtain fabric

Wanneer Boetie my help, neem dit seker so 2 - 3 uur per paneel.

As I have the time, I would cut the panels and do the necessary preparations. When the kids give me a chance, I would attach the lining and put the curtains up. If DS is helping, then each panel takes about 2 - 3 hours.
Panele word gesny op die kombuisvloer (die grootste beskikbare oppervlak) / The panels are cut on the kitchen floor (the biggest available space)

The seems are then measured and ironed in, the lining is added and everything is stitched together.

Transformation of the kids' room: total of 4 days/2 weekends.

Now I need to start on the main bedroom's and the hallway's curtains. Until later!

Slowly (very slowly) things are getting settled again, adjusting to having 2 kids. I even have some time to work with my fabrics.

Currently I am working on a new quilt. I am using the same pattern as for Brother 2's quilt, but I am using a different colour scheme.

Voorgestelde patroon / Proposed pattern

These are the fabrics I am using. The person for whom this quilt is meant, likes blue. Unfortunately I didn't have any turquoise in my stash, which is his favourite colour.

This is the work I have done in the last 3 weeks. Fabrics were prepped, cut, the necessary HST's were prepped and cut. Currently they are waiting for me to be ironed open and then the construction of the quilt can start.

Hope I get some time tonight to work on them. Until later!

Blogger's Quilt Festival Fall 2016

Dis weer daardie tyd: Blogger's Quilt Festival, aangebied deur Amy van Amy's Creative Side.

It is that time again: Blogger's Quilt Festival, hosted by Amy from Amy's Creative Side.

Ek skryf dus my laaste voltooide kwilt in, in the Large Quilt- kategorie

I haven't really had success regarding completed quilts. Thus, I will enter my last finished quilt in the Large Quilt Category.

Toestemming om foto te gebruik vanaf EM Groenewald / Permission to use this photo from EM Groenewald

Hierdie kwilt het ek vir my broer gemaak.

This quilt I made for my brother. My idea was to make for each of my siblings a quilt that fits to the "person" (colour, pattern, size,...). This quilt measures 315" around and consists of Half Square Triangles for the most part, with a square here and there. As can be deduced from the last photo, this quilt is much loved.

Enjoy the rest of the Quilt Festival, and remember to vote for your favourite quilts.

Thanks Amy for this wonderful opportunity to take part and to draw inspiration from other quilts!

Ietsie kleins

It seems that small projects are the thing to do these days, in my house at least. With two little busy bodies and my work, I have little time for myself and the Elna.

DS was invited to a birthday party this weekend. The girl likes dinosaurs, so I went and grabbed my only dinosaur fabric. From FatCat Patterns I got a pattern for a dino.

I just had enough fabric for a pillow casing. I tried to keep the applique as simple as possible.

The fabric was unfortunately not enough for me to fold the sleeve in the inside as well. Thanks to Hubby we decided on velcro to keep the pillow inside.

Until later!

Breiwerk

Onder andere in my kas, is 'n gebreide jas. 13.5.

Here in the southern hemisphere things are cooling down a bit, so all the knitwear, blankets and quilts are being pulled closer.

One of the items in my dresser is a knitted coat. I didn't knit it myself - my mom did because my knitting skills are a crying shame. The pattern comes from the magazine "Australian Homespun", vol. 13.5.

My jas (links) het al sy porsie van gebruik gehad / My coat (left) already had it's fair share of wear and tear.

As ek reg onthou, het my vriendin baie van my jas gehou.

My friend liked my coat so much, that my mom had to knit her one as well - as a surprise off course!

Dankie Ma!

Thanks Mom! Now we won't be cold this winter :)

'n Belofte is 'n belofte...

Hallo almal!

Hi All!

Yes, I am still here. Since October things have been a bit of a mess and I promised you a few pictures of what I did. I did warn you that it won't be much to look at...

This is how far I got with the embroidery Christmas quilt before life happend.

DS showed me this picture  a lot and I thus assumed that he wanted the doll. After some time trying to understand the instructions of doll making and buying the necessary needles and tools, I jumped in and tried to finish the doll in time for his birthday. For a first-try I suppose it is not too bad, but I am not 100% happy. DS is playing with the doll, however, so I will leave it at that.

And then life happened. Shortly after this I fell pregnant and the nausea had me completely upside down. Until recently, I had not the energy nor the desire to touch a piece of fabric. This time we are expecting a little girl who will be born next month, if all goes well.

Shortly after we heard that I was pregnant, we had to renew our occupation permits. Long stories short - it was chaotic! We had to travel between SA en Mauritius a few times, and that over Christmas and New Year, with uncertainty around every corner. It seems that our permits just took forever for no particular reason. Good news is that our permits were approved in the end and we are permitted to stay another 3 years.

"Nuut en Oud" / "New and Old"

After a long while with no quilting, I started to "itch" to make something. Just my luck that DS got invited to a party of a 3 year old girl in his class. And what would I do for a gift...make one off course! Since I only had 3 days to think of something, I went to my archives and searched for the pattern of the bag I made years ago. Some diving into my stash turned up enough fabric to make a pink bag. I also got the chance to finally use my new sewing machine to the fullest and I even had some guts to try out a creative stitch! I am really proud of this bag.

So, that is all I have to show for 5 months of absence.

Hopefully, before baby arrives, I will have attempted something else to show.

Until later!
