Tandemuis en DJ

 Sjoe, baie water het onder die brug geloop sedert my laaste "blog post". Ek is egter nog hier, en my vingers en naalde is aan die werk!

My eerste projek wat ek kan wys is Boetie se tandekussing. Hy het onlangs sy eerste tand gewissel. Gegewe dat ons in 'n land is met baie kulture en tale, het ek bietjie gaan rondkyk oor hoe ander kulture en lande die tandmuis-ding doen. Ons het as kinders ons skoene gebruik, maar my kinders dra nie skoene nie, so 'n ander plan moes gemaak word. Sommige kulture het 'n glas met water gebruik, ander begrawe die tand en sommige gooi dit van die dak af...Baie interessant! Ek het toe op die idee van 'n tande kussing afgekom, en het blitsvinning een aanmekaar gesit.

Wow, lots of water has gone under the bridge since my last blog post. I am however still here and my fingers and needles are working hard!

My first project to show, is DS's tooth pillow. He lost his first tooth recently and considering that we live in a country with multiple cultures and languages, I decided to take a look around at all the ways how the tooth is presented for the tooth fairy. As children, we used our shoes, but my kids don't wear shoes, so a plan had to be made. Some cultures use a glass and water, some bury the tooth and others throw the tooth from the roof. It is all very interesting! Then I came across the concept of a tooth pillow and very quickly put one together.

Ek het filt geneem, twee sirkels uitgesny asook 'n halwe sirkel. Die halwe sirkel dien as die sakkie waarin die tand gebêre moet word. Ek het als met gou met die hand vasgemaak en gestop, en 'n lint met knope vasgewerk sodat die kussing teen die bed kon hang en Tooth Fairy daarop geverf. Dit was baie vinnig en eenvoudig gemaak, en ek was nie heeltemal gelukkig op die ou end nie, maar die kussing is daar en dit is gebruik om die tande-skat vir die tandmuis veilig te hou.

I took some felt, cut out 2 circles and a semicircle. The semicircle acted as the pocket in which the tooth is placed. I stitched everything by hand and stuffed the pillow, added a ribbon and buttons so the pillow can hang from the bed post and painted Tooth Fairy on it. I was not too happy about the pillow, but it was there and it was used to keep the tooth-treasure safe for the tooth fairy.

Na die tyd het ek in my materiale gaan grou, vir die kinders 'n kans gegee om hul eie materiale te kies en ordentlike tande kussings gemaak. Ek het sommer vir beide kinders 'n kussing gemaak, sodat Sussie ook kan deel hê aan die opwinding.

Afterwards I went to my stash, allowed the kids to choose their own fabrics and I made a proper tooth pillow. I made one for both of them, so that DD can also have part in the excitement.

Ek het vir die tandmuis 'n klein boodskap op geborduur, 'n tand vasgewerk asook die sakkie waarin die tand geplaas moet word. Beide kinders het besluit om 3 knippies aan die sakkie vas te werk...vir goeie sekuriteit :)

Die borduurwerk op die donker kussing is bietjie te vêr na links, maar ek gaan dit so los. Als op die groen kussing is beter gespasiëerd. Die kussings is gestop met vere van 'n ou kussing wat geskeur het. Nou is ons voorbereid vir die volgende tand se wissel!

I embroidered a small message for the tooth fairy on the pillow, added a tooth and a little bag into which the tooth will go for safe keeping. Both kids decided to have 3 clips on the bag...for better security :)

The embroidery on the dark pillow is a bit too far to the left, but I am going to leave it like that. The spacing on the green pillow is better. I stuffed the two pillows with feathers from an old pillow which got torn. Now we are prepared for the next tooth to fall out!

Verder werk ek nog aan DJ, alhoewel die spoed waarteen ek blokkies produseer byna tot 'n stilstand nou gekom het. Hier is nog 5 blokke wat ek tot op hede klaar het.

 I am still working on DJ, although the speed at which blocks are produced has slowed down to a crawl. Here are 5 blocks that I managed to finish so far.

 Ek werk aan nog 'n paar projekte, maar het nog nie iets om vir julle te wys nie. Hopelik sal en binne-kort iets hê.

Projekte tydens ons afsonderingsperiode

Hallo daar! Ek is so bly om weer agter my rekenaar te kan sit en 'n blog post te kan skryf. Sedert ons in afsondering gegaan het, vanaf 20 Maart tot nou, moes ek vele rolle vertolk, wat my natuurlik baie oorweldig het en my baie besig gehou het. Ek het min tyd gehad vir naaldwerk, maar hier is die projekte waarmee ek myself besig gehou het...

Hi there! I am so happy to be able to sit behind my pc and write a blog post. I had to play many roles since our lockdown started, from 20 March to now, which left me overwhelmed and busy. I did not have a lot of time for sewing, but these are the projects I have been busy with...

1. Maskers (natuurlik) / Masks (off course) 

 2 Die kinders se kwilte / The kids' quilts

Sussie se kwilt. Elkeen van hulle kon hul eie agterkant se materiaal kies. Sy het Paw Patrol gekies. Ek het die kwiltwerk 'n kombinasie van meandering en "doggy treats" gemaak. / DD's quilt. Each of them could chose their own backing. She chose Paw Patrol, so I did the quilting with meandering and "doggy treats"

Boeta se kwilt. Hy het Minions vir sy agterkant gekies. Ek het die kwiltwerk blare gemaak, aangesien dit die tema van die materiale was (oerwoud) asook die blare van die Minions se klere. / DS's quilt. He chose Minions for his backing. I chose to quilt leaves for this quilt, as it fitted the theme of the fabric (jungle) as well as the outfits of the Minions.

3. Ek het toe besluit dat dit is tyd vir 'n projek, wat ek al lankal al wou maak - die kinders se "Memory Quilts". Ek het al hulle baba klere, tot en met 18 maande ouderdom, gehou juis vir hierdie projek. Sussie is die jongste en is nou 4, so dis tyd dat hierdie klere verwerk word. Enige klere wat oorbly na hierdie projek, sal vir liefdadigheid gegee word.

3. After this, I decided to take on a project that I have been wanting to do for years - the kids' Memory Quilts. I kept there clothes up to the age of 18 months just for this project. DD is my youngest and is now 4, so it is time for the clothes to be processed. The clothes that will be left over after the project, will be donated to charity.

Tans word my naalwerk area hoofsaaklik as my tuis kantoor gebruik, so ek spandeer nie baie tyd aan my naalwerk nie. Hopelik sal dit binne-kort verander.

Volgende 6 DJ blokke klaar

Ek het nog 6 blokke van my DJ klaar. Stadig maar seker begin hierdie kwilt nou vorm kry. Die tema vir hierdie blokke (behalwe 1) was fuzzy cutting en appliek. Dit was nie oorspronklik my idee om appliek nou al te doen nie. Ek wou dit vir laaste los, aangesien appliek gewoonlik vir my vinnig gaan. Maar, nadat ek myself die uitdaging gegee het om G11 (Blou blok met honde en strikkies) te doen (sien my vorige plasing) het die fuzzy cutting en appliek gogga baie hard gebyt LOL

I finsihed 6 more DJ blocks. Slowly the quilt is starting to get shape. The theme for these blocks (except 1) is fuzzy cutting and applique. I didn't plan on doing applique yet. I wanted to leave it for last as I find applique to go quickly. But, after challenging myself (see my previous post) to do G11 (Blue block with dogs and bows), I guess the bug just bit too hard LOL

Met die pienk blok, het ek my eie reel gebreek: "moenie stikwerk doen as jy moeg is nie". Ek het 23:00 gou-gou die blok aanmekaar gesit, net om te besef ek het my driehoeke verkeerd om vasgewerk. Die volgende oggend het ek dit gou reggestel...

I broke my own rule with the pink block: "don't stitch when you are tired". I quickly assembled the block 23:00 at night, just to discover I had my triangles the wrong way around. The next morning I corrected that...

Tussen-deur het ek vir my 'n nuwe pennetjiesak gemaak. My ou een is nou gedaan en het begin losskeur en uitrafel. Ek het nie 'n patroon gebruik nie, nie die grootte van die ou pennetjiesak as verwysing gebruik en gestik.

In the meantime I made a new bag for my pegs. The old one started to disintegrate. I didn't use a pattern but I did use the size of the old bag as a reference.

Dear Jane vordering

Ek het nog 6 blokke en driehoeke klaar van my DJ kwilt. Ek is baie opgewonde oor die geel stêr blok. Die middel van die blok het "geskree" vir 'n fuzzy cut prentjie ;)

I have 6 more blocks and triangles finished of my DJ quilt. I am very excited about the yellow star block. The center just screamed for a fuzzy cut picture ;)

Dit is die diagram, soos in die boek, waarvolgens ek werk. Hierdie is my vordering en die hoeveelheid stukkies wat vasgewerk is.

This is the diagram, as per the book, from which I am working. Here is my progress and the pieces sewn together.

Sal ek G-11 volgende doen? Dan sal ek 'n blok in elke ry en kolom gemaak het LOL

Dear Jane Materiale

Oorspronklik wou ek by die "sew along" se maadelikse materiaal pakkies gebly het, soos ek dit ontvang het vir elke spesifieke maand, vanaf die BOM program. Maar ek het begin besef dat ek sekere materiale eerder vir ander blokke wil gebruik, wat nie noodwendig in daardie maand se pakkie val nie. Dus het ek van strategie verander en het al die materiale in kleurgroepe geplaas. Dit het my ook 'n beter idee gegee van wat beskikbaar is.

Originally I wanted to stay within the sew along monthly packages, as I received them from the BOM program. But I have now realised that there are some fabrics that suits other blocks better, which doesn't necessarily fall within that particular month's package. So I have changed strategy and have grouped the fabrics by colour. This also gives me a better idea of what is available.

Terwyl ek die materiale gesorteer het, het ek sommer foto's geneem en die materiale getel. In die betrokke kleurgroepe, staan die saak soos volg:
- Rooi 22 Lappe plus 1 duplikaat
- Oranje 11 Lappe plus 2 duplikate
- Geel 17 Lappe plus 2 duplikate
- Groen 44 Lappe plus 5 duplikate
- Blou 39 Lappe plus 7 duplikate
- Pienk 33 Lappe plus 1 duplikaat
- Pers 20 Lappe plus 3 duplikate
- Totaal van 207 Lappe (uitgesluit die wit materiaal)

While I was sorting the fabrics, I took photos and counted the pieces. In the colour groups, this is where I stand:
- Red 22 Pieces plus 1 duplicate
- Orange 11 Pieces plus 2 duplicates
- Yellow 17 Pieces plus 2 duplicates
- Green 44 Pieces plus 5 duplicates
- Blue 39 Pieces plus 7 duplicates
- Pink 33 Pieces plus 1 duplicate
- Purple 20 Pieces plus 3 duplicates
- Total of 207 Pieces (excluding the white fabric)

Ek is nie seker waarom ek so baie groen en blou materiaal het en so min oranje nie. Ek sou ook dink dat om 225 blokke en driehoeke te maak, gaan ek 225 stukke lap benodig...bygesê dit is fat 8's so daar is genoeg materiaal vir 2 blokke, afhangende van die patroon.

I am not sure why I have so many green and blue fabric and so little orange. I also would have thought that to make 225 blocks and triangles, I would need 225 pieces of fabric...mind you, it is fat 8's, so you can make 2 patterns from one piece of fabric, depending on the pattern.

Hierdie is die wit/agtergrond materiaal. Die groen/bruin materiaal aan die onderkant, wil ek vir die rugkant en dalk die omboorsel gebruik.

This is the white/background fabric. The green/brown fabric at the bottom is what I want to use for the backing and binding.

Impromptu kwilt

Ek het nog 2 DJ blokke om vir julle te wys. Beide hierdie blokke lyk nie heeltemal soos die blokke in die oorspronklike kwilt nie. Ek dink die skrywer het die patroon aangepas. Ek het nog sulke blokke teëgekom, en het besluit om daardie blokke soos diè in die kwilt te laat lyk, eerder as om die patroon in die boek te volg.

I have 2 more DJ blocks to show you. Both these blocks doesn't look exactly like those in the original quilt. I think the author adapted the patterns. I had more blocks like that, and decided to replicate those blocks in the quilt, rather than follow the pattern in the book.

Na hierdie 2 blokke voltooi is, het ek nie meer gedrukte patrone gehad nie. Intussen vra Boetie die heeltyd nog vir 'n kombers, sedert ek my DJ begin het. Ek gryp toe 'n materiaal pakkie, wat ek as geskenk by iemand gekry het, en die pakkie het 'n gratis patroon by. Ek besluit toe om die patroon vir hom te maak...

After these 2 blocks were finished, I didn't have any more printed patterns. In the meantime DS has been asking me for a "blanket" ever since I started my DJ. I grabbed a fabric pack, which I received as a gift, and in this packet was a free pattern. So I decided to make this for him.

Dis die patroon wat saam met die materiaalpakkie gekom het. Dis 'n maklike en vinnige patroon. / This is the pattern that came with the fabric pack. This is an easy and quick pattern.

Hierdie is die materiaal wat in die pakkie gekom het. 20 verskillende lappies, elkeen herhaal om 'n totaal van 40 10" lappies te maak. /

This is the fabric that came in the packet. 20 different pieces, each repeating to make a total of 40 10" pieces.

Die voltooide bokant. Die randstrook is nie deel van die patroon nie. Ek het dit bygewoeg sodat Boetie darem 'n jaar of twee lank die kwilt kan gebruik ;) Die bokant is ongeveer 158cm x 158cm /

The finished quilt top. The border is not part of the pattern. I added it so that DS can have at least an extra year or two's worth of use from the quilt ;) The top is about 62.5" x 62.5".

DJ vordering is maar stadig

Vordering is maar stadig hierdie rondte deur. Die "foundation piecing" blokke begin nou vir my ingewikkeld raak ten opsigte van die aanmekaar werk. Ek het darem weer 5 blokke om vir julle te wys.

Progress is slow this time around. The foundation piecing blocks are starting to get difficult for me, with regards to the assembly. I can at least show you 5 more blocks.

Nuutste vordering op DJ

Verlede week was 'n goeie week vir Dear Jane. Ek het 8 blokke voltooi. Hierdie week was ek minder suksesvol, met slegs 2 blokke tot dusvêr (foto's daarvan met 'n volgende geleentheid)

Last week was a very good week for Dear Jane. I managed to complete 8 blocks. This week was not such a great week, with only 2 blocks so far (photos of them in a future post)

Die groen blok links-bo is my gunstelling. Ek kon die groot groen blokke "fuzzy cut" en die algemene blok meer uniek maak.

The green block top row and left, is my favourite. I fuzzy cut the big green blocks, to make the overall block more unique.

Hopelik kan ek nog 'n blok of twee hierdie naweek voltooi. Tot later!

Nog 6 blokke klaar

Ek het die laaste 2 weke nog 6 blokke klaargemaak vir die Dear Jane kwilt, en ek het 'n paar blokke herstel ook.

I completed 6 more blocks for the Dear Jane quilt the last 2 weeks and I repaired a few blocks as well.

In die linkerkanste blok was nie al die Nine-patches in lyn gewees nie, so ek het dit herstel. Die driehoek is 'n nuwe blok, maar ek het oorspronklik nagelaat om 'n naattoelating aan die onderkant te los en het dit besef nadat ek die hele blok voltooi het. Ek het net die onderste pers gedeelte vervang.

For the left block, the Nine-patches didn't line up properly, so I fixed that. The triangle is a new block, but after I completed it, I realised I never had a seam allowance at the bottom of the triangle. So I replaced the bottom purple part.
 

Die pienk blok links is ook 'n nuwe blok en het dieselfde probleem as die geel blok gehad, in die sin dat die buitenste randstroke was nie groot genoeg om 'n ordentlike naattoelating te hê nie, so nadat ek die pienk blok gemaak het, het ek beide blokke se randstroke vervang met brëer stroke.

The pink block on the left is also a new block, and ended up having the same issue as the yellow block, which was that the outside borders weren't wide enough for proper seam allowances. So after I finished the pink block, I replaced both blocks' borders with wider strips.

Met hierdie blok het ek gesukkel om die blok die regte grootte te kry. Ek was alles tussen 1/8" en 1/2" uit gewees. Ek dink die feit dat ek 11pm nog aan die gang was het nie gehelp nie ;) Ek het die driehoeke 3 keer vervang, voordat ek tou opgegooi het. Die volgende dag het ek net nodig gehad om 1 driehoek te vervang. Die blok is nie 100% 5" groot nie, maar dis naby genoeg.

I really struggled with this block to get it the right size. I was out from 1/8" to 1/2". I think that fact that I was still sewing at 11pm didn't help ;). I had to redo the triangles 3 times before I got fed-up. The next day I had to change one triangle only. The block isn't 100% 5" big, but it is close enough.

Uitgesluit al die herstelwerk, is hierdie dan my werk vir die laaste 2 weke

Excluding all the repairs, this is my work for the last 2 weeks.

Dusvêer het ek 350 stukkies materiaal vasgewerk. Die Dear Jane kwilt se totale "piece count" is 5 602 stukke. Ek wonder of dit die "sashing" insluit?
Korreksie - ek het 375 stukkies materiaal vasgewerk. Ek wou al die blokke wat reeds voltooi is neerskryf, en die hoeveelheid stukkies per blok, toe ek besef het dat ek het 'n optelfout gemaak.

So far I have sewn 350 pieces of fabric together. The Dear Jane quilt's total piece count is 5 602 pieces. I wonder if that includes the sashing? 
Correction - the piece count is 375. I wanted to write down all the completed blocks and their piece count, when I realised that I made a counting error.

Borduur kwilt en Dear Jane

Ek het stadig aan begin vordering maak met my borduur kwilt, totdat daar 'n klein ongelukkie gebeur het. Dit het iets te doen met 'n rooi sak wat nat geword het en kleur uitgeloop het. Hierdie rooi sak is toe bo-op my borduurstuk geplaas en die kleur het oorgeloop tot op die borduurstuk. Noodeloos om te sê wat was baie ongelukkig toe ek dit ontdek. Gelukkig wel, is dat ek kon die vlekke feitlik uithaal. Dis 95% weg, en as jy weet waarvoor om te kyk, sal jy dit kan sien. Andersins is dit goed genoeg om nie 'n ramp te wees nie. Ek het al die "halo's" van die engele klaar, en die vlerke van nog 2 engele klaar (jammer, geen foto daarvan nie).

I started making some progress on the embroidery quilt, when a mishap happened. It involves a red bag getting wet and begin placed on top of my embroidery piece. It then so happened that the red started running...It goes without saying that I was very upset when I discovered it. Luckily, I did manage to mostly make the stain go away. It is about 95% vanished, and if you know where to look, you might find it. But I am satisfied that it isn't a disaster anymore. I have after that completed all the halos of the angles and I finished 2 angles' wings (sorry, no photo of that)

Voor ek die borduurstuk begin was het / Before I started washing the piece

Terwyl ek na die soveelste was vir die borduurstuk gewag het om droog te word, het ek aan 'n ander stuk gewerk. Dit het my darem so bietjie beter laat voel en die emosies gesus :)

While I was waiting for the embroidery piece to dry, after the so-many-th was, I decided to work on another piece. It did calm the emotions a bit and I soon felt better :)

My gedagtes het egter gou begin draai na die "boks in die hoek" met al my Dear Jane materiale in, en vir die laaste paar dae het ek daaraan begin werk. Die plan is om alles wat ek met die masjien eers kan vaswerk, te verwerk en dan oor te gaan na die "foundation piecing" en appliek. Dusvêr het ek 12 blokke klaar. Daar is geen kleurplan nie, ek maak dit behoorlik "scrappy".

My mind kept wandering to the "box in the corner" lately, with all my Dear Jane fabrics in. And so I have started working on those. The plan is to first finish all the machine piecing pieces, then move over to foundation piecing and applique. So far I have finished 12 blocks. There is no colour placement plan. It is all scrappy.
