Gekwilte baadjie - Deel 2

In my vorige blog post het ek verduidelik waarom ek besluit het om 'n gekwilte baadjie te maak, en wat die materiaal was wat ek gekies het daarvoor. Ek het ook al die snywerk gedoen. Nou is dit tyd om als aanmekaar te sit.

In my previous blog post I explained why I decided to make a quilted jacket and what fabrics I was using. I also completed all the cutting. Now it is time to put everything together.

Ek het eers die rug se NYB blokke gemaak, gevolg deur die moue. Dit is die enigste volledige NYB blokke in die baadjie. Daarna het ek aan die boë gewerk en laastens die lappel. Ek het vele uitlegte eers probeer voordat ek als aanmekaar begin stik het.

Al die gekleurde dele is aan die silwer geappliek, en sommer terselfdertyd 'n bietjie impromptu hand-kwiltwerk is gedoen, Ek het die batting aan die silwer materiaal geryg en toe die baadjie, uitgesluit die moue, aanmekaar gesit. Daarna het ek die gekleurde stukke op geappliek, deur beide die silwer laag en die batting. Laastens het ek sakke ingewerk. Dis 'n bietjie nou, maar my foon pas perfek daarin.

I completed the NYB blocks on the back first, followed by sleeves. Those are the only full NYB blocks in the jacket. After that I made all the coloured arches, and lastly the front. I tried many layouts first, before I started stitching everything together.

All the coloured pieces are appliqued unto the silver fabric, and some impromptu quilting was also done in the process. I basted the batting to the silver fabric, and constructed the jacket first (except the sleeves). Then I appliqued the coloured pieces, taking the thread through both the silver layer and the batting. Lastely I added some pockets. It is a bit narrow, but my phone fits perfectly.

Die voering is orige materiaal van 'n vorige kwilt. Ek wou oorspronklik 'n ligter kleur gebruik het, maar die nate het deurgeskyn, dus het ek op die donkerder kleur besluit (want dis al ander materiaal wat genoegsaam was vir die voering ;) )

The lining was cut from left over fabric from a previous quilt. Originally I wanted to use a lighter colour, but the seems showed through the fabric, so I decided on the darker fabric instead (mostly because it was the only other fabric that I had enough of to make the lining ;) )

Nadat als aanmekaar gewerk is, en die ritssluiter aangeheg is, het ek besluit om versiersteke te gebruik eerder as die gewone reguitlyn, vir die "top stitching" Die moue s'n het perfek uitgekom, maar ek dink egter ek moes grys gare gebruik het vir die kraag en onderlyf se stikwerk, eerder as swart...

After everything was stitched together, and the zipper was added, I decided to use some decorative stitches for the top stitching, instead of the normal straight line stitching. The sleeves came out perfectly, but in hindsight, I should have used grey thread instead of black, for the collar and the bottom stitching.

Ek het dit baie geniet om die baadjie te maak. Inteendeel, ek maak nog 2 baadjies...Ek sal dit wys soos die projekte vorder. Die baadjie is baie sagter en snoesiger as was ek oorspronklik gedink het dit sou wees. Ek is mal daaroor!

Die laaste 2 maande was vet pret - ek was beslis in my "happy place".

Ek kyk gereeld na YouTube videos oor mense wat historiese kledingstukke maak vir moderne alledaagse gebruik. Ek geniet dit en vind inspirasie daarin om die tegnieke te sien wat hulle gebruik in hul konstruksie van die kledingstukke.

Saam met dit was ek opsoek na 'n baie spesifieke trui wat ek tot op hede nog nie in die hande kan kry nie. So gebeur dit dan een aand terwyl ek aan my DJ blokke werk, dat die perfekte oplossing vir my tref: maak eerder my eie (gekwilte) baadjie! 

The last 2 months have been fun - I was definitely in my "happy place"

I enjoy watching YouTube videos about people making historical clothing for modern everyday use. I enjoy watching and find inspiration in the techniques that they use when constructing the garments.

With that, I was looking for a cardigan, which I have not found to date. So one night, while working on my DJ blocks, the perfect solution hit me: make my own (quilted) jacket instead!

En hier is dit! / And here it is!

Ek het baie staat gemaak op die inligting van die YouTube videos aangesien ek nog nooit 'n kledingstuk vir myself (of enige iemand anders) gemaak het nie. Ek 'n patroon opgetrek deur 'n bestaande baadjie in my kas te gebruik om die patroon op te basseer. Ek het ook die patroon met 1.5" vergroot, om spasie te skep vir 2 lae materiaal en die "batting" tussen-in. Dit het my 'n rukkie gevat om die patroon te kry tot op 'n punt waar ek gelukkig was, gevolg deur die pret van materiale kies.

I counted on the information I gathered from the YouTube videos, since I have never made a piece of clothing for myself (or anyone else for that matter). I used an existing jacket in my closet to draft a pattern. I enlarged the pattern by 1.5" to accommodate for 2 layers of fabric and batting in between. It took me a while to get the pattern to a point where I felt happy with it, followed by the fun of choosing fabrics.

Die silwer materiaal het ek jare gelede gekoop en gewag vir die "perfekte projek" daarvoor. Ek het stukkies al gebruik in vorige projekte, maar nooit gevoel dat die materiaal geskik is vir daardie spesifieke projek nie. Dus het ek dit uitgetrek en besluit my baadjie is die perfekte projek vir die materiaal. Die ander kleure is oorskied materiaal van vorige projekte.

I bought the silver fabric many years ago, keeping it for that "perfect project". I did use small pieces of it in other projects, but never felt that the fabric was meant for those projects. This time, I pulled it out and decided that my jacket will be the perfect project for the fabric. The other colours are leftover fabric from previous projects.

 

Ek het besluit op driehoeke en NYB blokke vir die baadjie. Die snywerk het my vir lank besig gehou, want ek wou alles op een slag klaar sny.

 

I decided on triangles and NYB blocks for the jacket. Cutting took me some time since I wanted to do all the cutting in one go.

'n Armada hasies

Daar kom so dan en wan 'n tyd, wanneer jy besef dat tyd stap aan. Hierdie week het ek so 'n oomblik gehad, toe ons vir ons geliefde kinders nuwe beddens moes aankoop. Die kinders groei tog te vinning!!! Ons "baba" is dan al byna 3 jaar oud.

There comes a time, every once in a while, when you realise that time never stops. I had such a moment this week, when we went to buy the kids new beds. They grow up so fast!!! Our "baby" is nearly 3.

As deel van die nuwe beddens projek, kom natuurlik nuwe beddegoed. Omdat hierdie Mauritius is, het ek slegs lakens gekoop. Paslakens vir die bedek van die matrasse en gewone plat lakens wat as komberse gaan dien. Sussie het 2 lakens gekies, wat geen motiewe op het nie, en dus die geleentheid vir my geskep het om dit vir haar te versier. Ek het tussen my lappe gaan grou, 'n knoop en doop stuk gekies en laat waai met die soek van pattrone van hase, wat ek vir appliek kan gebruik.

As part of the new beds project, came the new bedding as well. Because this is Mauritius, I only bought sheets. The fitted sheets will be used to cover the mattresses and the flat sheets will be used as blankets. DD chose only solid coloured sheets, which gives me the opportunity to decorated it for her.
So, I rummaged through my stash, decided on a starburst fabric and started searching for patterns of rabbits, that can be used in applique.

Dit het my 3 dae geneem, om die patrone op die lap te teken en die hase uit te sny. Ek het vanmiddag die laaste stel van die legioen hase uitgesny. Dis eintlik net 38 van hulle...maar toe ek klaar was, het dit gevoel soos 'n armada hase wat oor my gespring het.

It has taken me 3 days to transfer the patterns unto the fabric and to cut the rabbits out. I finished the last set of the legion this afternoon. Actually, it is only 38 rabbits, but it did feel like an armada of rabbits that jumped over me when I finished.

Die volgende stap is om die hase op die laken te plaas en dan dit met die masjien vas te appliek.

Nou eers is ek moeg en my rug seer van die heeltyd vooroor gebuig sit. Dis tye soos hierdie wat ek wens ek het een van daardie spesiale "snyers" gehad soos wat Accuquilt het.

The next step is to place the rabbits on the sheet and then applique them with the machine.

But right now, I am tired and my back hurts from sitting, forward bending, to cut these out. This is the time I wish I had one of those special "cutters" like the ones form Accuquilt.

Ietsie kleins

Lyk my dat klein projekte is in my huis, aan die orde van die dag. Met twee woelwaters in die huis en my werk, kry ek maar min tyd vir myself en my Elna.

Boetie is uitgenooi na 'n verjaarsdagpartytjie die naweek. Die dogtertjie hou van dinosourusse en ek het my enigste dinosourus lap gaan uitgrou. Verder het ek op FatCat Patterns 'n patroon gekry.

It seems that small projects are the thing to do these days, in my house at least. With two little busy bodies and my work, I have little time for myself and the Elna.

DS was invited to a birthday party this weekend. The girl likes dinosaurs, so I went and grabbed my only dinosaur fabric. From FatCat Patterns I got a pattern for a dino.

Ek het net genoeg materiaal gehad vir 'n kussingsloop. Ek het die appliek redelik eenvoudig probeer hou.

I just had enough fabric for a pillow casing. I tried to keep the applique as simple as possible.

Die materiaal was ongelukkig nie genoegsaam, sodat ek die "sleeve" ook kon omvou in die binne-kant nie. Danksy Manlief het ons besluit op velcro om die kussing binne te hou.

The fabric was unfortunately not enough for me to fold the sleeve in the inside as well. Thanks to Hubby we decided on velcro to keep the pillow inside.

Bokant is klaar

Wel, 38 uur nadat ek begin werk het aan die kwilt, is die bokant uiteindelik klaar. Ek is heel tevrede met my werk.

Well, 38 hours after I started working on the quilt, the top is finally done. I am very satisfied with my work. 

Aangesien Boetie baie besig is en baie tyd van my vra, het ek besluit om net een uur per dag, elke dag, te spandeer aan die kwilt (behalwe naweke). Soms was ek gelukkig en kon ek bietjie meer doen, maar ek het by die skedule gehou en die resultate is bevredigend.

Nou moet ek die rugkant stik. Volgende week gaan ek die vordering vir die kliënt wys - ek hoop sy sal teverede wees.

Since DS is very busy and demanding a lot of my time, I decided to spend only one hour per day, every day, on the quilt (except weekends). Sometimes I was lucky and could do a little bit more, but I kept to the schedule and the results are satisfying.

Now I need to work on the back. Next week I will show the progress to the client. Hope she will like it.

'n Rukkie gelede het ons 'n "besoeker" gehad. 'n Naaldekoker het in ons motorhuis ingevlieg en net op die grond bly lê. Manlief het hom opgetel en na ons stoep geneem. Die naaldekoker was so gemaklik dat hy selfs op Manlief se arm bly sit het terwyl hy rondgeloop het en op die rekenaar gewerk het. Toe Manlief weer uitloop tot op die stoep, besluit die naaldekoker dis genoeg en vlieg weer weg. Ek wonder of hy net 'n bietjie wou rus?

'n Short while ago we had a "visitor". A dragonfly flew into our garage and didn't get up from the floor. Hubby picked him up and took him to our balcony. The dragonfly was so much at ease, that he sat on Hubby's arm while he walked around and worked on the computer. When Hubby went back to the balcony, the dragonfly decided that was enough and took off. I wounder if he just took a short pit stop?

1ste Randstrook is aan

Ek kan uiteindelik my vordering wys. Die eerste randstrook is aan die kwilt. Daar moet nog 'n tweede randstrook kom, maar dit moet nog gestik word. Daarna moet nog hartjies aan die eerste randstrook geappliek word. So, nog baie werk om te doen...

I can finally show you my progress. The first border is on the quilt. A second border needs to be added, but that needs to be pieced first. After that I need to applique some hearts on the first border. So, still a lot of work to be done...

Here I chatter away on quilt-/embroidery-/applique-related topics, sometimes about Mauritius (where I currently live) and sometimes about things that are none of the two.

Let's get things started, shall we?

First of all, a big thank you to Michelle, from The Jypsy Quilter, who invited me to participate in the Blog Tour. For those who haven't yet visited her blog, please go and take a look. You will be mesmerized with beautiful quilts, some interesting comments on life (and everything that relates to that) and a lot of Quilting Inspector pics.

What am I working on?

Currently, I am working on a custom order. It is a simple quilt design - it only consists of repetitive strip piecing and applique.

Currently the first set of applique are done and awaiting their pieced partners.

How does my work differ from other of its genre?

Apart from the fact that I am making them and not someone else? OK, cheekiness aside.

I LOVE working with bright colours, strong contrast and solid/blender fabrics rather than printed fabrics.

Here are some examples:

Although I am still searching for the ideal applique method, for the moment I am sticking to Needle Turn Applique. I found that, with this method, I have absolute control on how the fabric will behave. I also enjoy the final result more than that of machine applique or using blanket stitches: the applique is clear, clean and puffy (if you understand what I mean).

Why do I write/create what I do?

I write my blog, mostly to keep me motivated at keeping to my quilting and to share with so many other quilters my work. Although my family enjoy and appreciate what I am doing, sometimes I have experiences that only other quilters will understand, and that is where the quilting community is a great source for inspiration, answers, more questions and ooooh's and aaaah's.

I quilt because my creative side can get some attention. If you would take a second to read my Blog heading (some might have to translate it), you will understand why I create quilts. It makes me feel happy.

How does my creating process work?

Most of the time I will see a pattern and try to "figure it out" - this means I don't always read the instructions on the construction of the pattern. This is true for my current project, as I have only a picture to work from. No measurements, templates,...nothing!

As soon as that is done, I will most likely make a few changes to the pattern and then go crazy shopping for fabric. I don't really have a big stash to be proud of, so many times I need to buy fabric and then I buy what I need, plus a little extra for mistakes.

Meanwhile, I will dream about the quilt until the fabric arrives and then I change into a cutting-crazy woman. Assembling (this part I enjoy the most) piecing, basting, quilting and finally binding. By this point I am normally fed-up with the quilt and although I have put my heart into its creation, I am glad that it is done.

Who's next?

1. Ruth at Ruth's place. Ruth is a very creative lady with many talents. She is very good at scrap booking, knits the cutest things and shares her experiences as an Australian living in Papua New Guinea. 

2. Millie from Millie's Quilting. Millie loves making string quilts (and they are quite something to see) and is a long-arm quilter. Her quilting is jaw dropping beautiful. (Millie's pc broke in the meantime, so she won't be able to post, but have a look at her blog anyway). She also happens to be a South African, living in the US.

3. Uhm...Since so many of the blogs I follow have already participated, I don't really have a third blog to suggest. So here is what I am going to do. On the right side panel of my blog, down to the middle, is my reading list. Take a peek at the blogs and see if anyone of those strike your fancy. I am sure there will be one or two that you will find interesting.

Ek het iets gedoen!

Ek kan nou ongelukkig nie spog met 'n kwilt wat klaar is nie, alhoewel die gevoel dat ek iets voltooi het is beslis daar. Ek het die materiale, wat ek in Julie ontvang het, begin voorberei vir die kwilt wat ek moet maak. Gistraand het ek die eerste appliek-blok voltooi en die tweede blok is voorberei en reg vir my om op te tel en vas te werk.

I can't brag with a finished quilt. However, the feeling that I completed something is definitely there. I cut the fabrics, which I received in July, and started prepping them for the quilt that I am making. Last night I finished the first applique block and the second block is ready and waiting to be worked on.

Die geel hartjie is so bietjie skeef, maar gelukkig moet ek die blok nog kleiner sny, dus gaan dit nie so 'n groot probleem wees nie. Dit gee ook 'n uniekheid aan die blok, of hoe? ;)

The yellow heart is a bit skew, but since I need to cut the block smaller, it won't be such a problem. Besides, it does give the block some uniqueness, doesn't it? ;)

Hopelik kan ek vannaand nog 'n blok klaar hê. Tot later!

Frienship Mini Quilt Swap

In September het ek deelgeneem aan 'n mini kwilt uitruiling. Dit was 'n geheime uitruiling, en dus kon ek nie veel daaroor blog nie, tot nou toe.

In September I took part in a mini quilt swap. It was a secret swap, thus I couldn't say much about it, until now.

Ons het almal 'n borduurwerk patroon gekry om te maak, en ons kon 'n kwilt daarmee skep. Die enigste vereistes was dat die kwilt moet 'n sekere grootte wees, en dat die borduurwerk daarin moet wees. Verder kon ons ons kreatiwiteit laat seevier.

We all received a stitchery and we had to make a quilt with it. The only requirements were that it had to be within a certain size and that the stitchery had to feature. Otherwise, we could set our creativity free.

Hier is my weergawe van die kwilt. Ek het met die "tuin" idee gebly en blomme ge-appliek met organza (soos met die kussings wat ek maak). My kwilt het aan Michele Foster van Quilting Gallery gegaan. Sy is ook die organiseerder van die uitruiling. (Dankie Michele vir jou insette en 'n wonderlike projek).

Here is my version of the quilt. I stayed with the "garden" idea and appliqued some flowers with organza (just like with my pillows). My quilt went to Michele Foster from Quilting Gallery. She is also the organizer of the swap. (Thank you Michele for your input and a wonderful project.)

 My "spook" was Benita Gustavsoon uit Swede. Sy het hierdie pragtige rooi-werk weergawe gemaak. Sy het ook die oulike skinkbord met Dalaperde gestuur. Baie dankie Benita. Die kwilt en skinkbord gaan baie geniet en waardeer word.

My "secret partner" was Benita Gustavsson from Sweden. She made this lovely redwork version. She also send me this cute tray with Dala horses. Thank you very much Benita. The quilt and tray will be enjoyed and appreciated.

Ek sal graag weer in so 'n uitruiling wil deelneem, wanneer die tyd en geleentheid dit toelaat.

Halfpad daar, en gepla met die maan

Ek het hierdie naweek weer bietjie agter nie naaldwerkmasjien gesit. Uiteindelik het ek die bokant klaar van Ma se tafeldoek. Nou net die agterkant vaswerk, en dit in die pos gooi. (Ma, lyk darem verras wanneer jy dit in die pos kry asb :) )

I did some sewing this weekend. I finished the top of Mom's tablecloth, at last! Now is it just adding the back and putting it in the post. (Mom, please act surprised when you receive this in the mail :) )

Die fout wat ek begaan het was om die horisontale shashing 1/4" te kort te knip. Ek het eers gedink om nog stroke te sny, omdat ek nog genoeg materiaal het, maar het later besluit om hulle eerder nog korter te sny, en dan hoek "stene" (die klein gekleurde blokkies) in te sit. Dit lyk vir my eintlik vrolik.

The mistake I made was to cut the horizontal shashing 1/4" too short. At first I wanted to cut new strips, since I had enough fabric, but later decided to cut the existing strips shorter, and add some corner "stones" (the small coloured blocks). To me this looks a lot prettier.

Ek weet nie van julle nie, maar ek geniet dit om na die sterre te kyk. Hier in Mauritius, veral aan die Weskus waar ons bly, is ons gelukkig genoeg om nie te veel lig besoedeling te ervaar nie, en is die sterre baie sigbaar in die aande. Vrydagaand het ek weer 'n wonderlike sig gesien. Die Maan, Venus en Jupiter almal in 'n ry. Gisteraand was hulle in 'n tipe driehoek, en hulle behoort weer teen Woensdag/Donderdag almal in 'n ry te wees, maar die keer is die maan bo Jupiter. (kliek op die prentjie om dit groter te maak)

I don't know about you, but I enjoy looking at the stars. Here in Mauritius, especially on the West Coast where we live, we don't have as much light pollution, and thus the stars are easier to see at night. On Friday night, I saw this wonderful sight: the Moon, Venus and Jupiter all in a row. Last night, they where in a triangle formation, and about Wednesday/Thursday they should be in a row again, with the boon on top of Jupiter. (click on the picture to make it bigger)

Besige naweek

Ek het 'n heerlike, besige naweek beleef. Wens net die naweek kon nog 'n dag of twee langer aanhou - ek geniet hierdie ontspanning en rustigheid hopeloos te veel :-)

Die hoogtepunt van hierdie naweek was dat ons meer as 60 liter reënwater kon opvang. Die water situasie hier is maar "touch and go", en ons probeer darem waar ons kan water spaar. Ek moet ook sê dat ons is gelukkig in die sin dat ons nog elke dag, al is dit vir kort rukkies, lopende water het. Nie almal is so gelukkig nie. Gister het 'n lieflike bui reën uitgebreek, en Manlief het summier die motor uitgetrek en dit in die reën gewas. Ek het besluit om al ons emmers en lee bottels te neem, en van die reën op te vang. Na die tyd moes ek egter van klere verander, maar dit was prent om in die reën te speel.

I had a wonderful, busy weekend. I just wish it could go on for another day or two. I am enjoying the piece and relaxation too much :-)

My highlight for this weekend is that we could gather about 60 liters of rain water. The water situation here is a bit "touch and go" and we are trying to save water where we can. I must mention that we are very fortunate to have had running water everyday, even if it is for short periods. Not everybody are as lucky. We had a lovely bit of rain yesterday, and Hubby decided there and then to wash the car in the rain. I decided to take all our empty bottels and buckets, and gather as much rain water as I can. Afterwards, I had to go for a wardrobe change, but it was fun playing in the rain.

Wat kwiltwerk aanbetref; ek het my eerste voltooide projek vir die jaar! Die 12 Days of Christmas kwilt is voltooi en ons moet net die hakkies in die muur insit om dit op te hang. Ek het gewone reguit lyn kwiltwerk gedoen. Die resultaat is baie bevredigend! Danksy 'n gespottery tussen my en Manlief, word die kwilt herdoop na die "koekie-kwilt". Ek wou dit eers die "lekkergoed winkel" genoem het, weens al die kleure wat my laat dink aan 'n lekkergoed winkel, maar die tongknoper "koekie-kwilt" het gewen.

Regarding my quilting; I have my first finished project of the year! The 12 Days of Christmas quilt is finished and we only need to put some hooks on the wall to hang it up. I only did some straight line quilting on it, and the results are satisfying! The quilt will be named the "cookie-quilt", due to some teasing between Hubby and me. I wanted to call it the "Sweet shop", since all the colours in the quilt reminds me of a sweet shop, but the tongue twister "cookie quilt" won.

Ek het ook intussen begin met 'n sekere dame (ahem...Hallo Ma!) se tafeldoek begin. Vir die volledige storie, kyk hier  en hier. Hierdie blokke het nog hul koppies nodig.
