In stead of completing existing projects (catching up of the NYB Quilt Along and Blogger's BOM), I started a new project. This project is on my list, so I am not feeling too guilty :)

I haven't made one stitch yet, but I can already see a few phases through which a quilt must go:

1.  Voorbereiding (beplanning, aankope en snywerk) / Preparation (planning, purchasing and cutting)

This phase is the start of everything. You dream up some lovely patterns and colour schemes, buy the correct (in other words "a lot") amount of fabric and start cutting.

2. Legkaart bou / Building the Puzzle

Now you group and place the fabric, just as you had it in your wonderful dream...and then realize something is not quite right...

O wel, daar gaan my "nuwer wetse" idees.

In my wonderful dream, I saw the colours flow from light to dark. But in reality, the method I chose resulted in the colours being thrown at each other! Well, so much for "new school" ideas.

3. Regstellings / Adjustments

The wonderful dream is now reality and you are starting to think straight. All the little mistakes are quickly repaired and the quilt looks much better. But that is not all. I thought a bit further...the person for whom I am making this quilt, is nearly 2 meters tall. Although the quilt is getting a broad border, I thought it a better idea to make enlarge the focal point...

Na die regstellings / After the adjustments

Bietjie ekstra bygesit / Additions

Hoera!

Nou is ek eers moeg met lappies gespeel. Moet seker begin met aandete...Tot later!

By adding the extra blocks, I used the fabric that I would otherwise have wasted (by removing them with the adjustments). Thus, I saved fabric!

This is of course only the beginning, but it is the most important part of the quilt's formation. Now I can move in behind the sewing machine and start sewing these pieces together.Yippee!

Now I am done playing with fabrics. I suppose I need to get dinner started...Until later!

  3. I agree, not always beautiful dreams come true. I also agree the second attempt looks much better. Planning and preparation are two importent steps, but I'm afraid I'm not very good at it... I tend to start sewing and then I'll see how it turns out.... :)

  4. I love your account of your quilt preparation process. Sometimes I do it that way and sometimes I just jump in feet first and go for it! The quilt is very bright and cheerful. Fun! I have caught up with your postings and have finally learned how to post my pix. I will be around
